Abstract
In their dedication to cultural enlightenment and modernization, modern thinkers showed a contradictory complex about traditional culture, especially about the ethical idealism of con-fucian school: a mixture of love and hatred, transcendence and devotion, radical desire to destruct and profound concern as well. This complex, to a certain extent, affects their method of criticism as well as their value system, which in turn influences China's modernization.
