Abstract

Aging is a significant global trendSo is it in ChinaWithin the framework of modern industrial civilization, age discrimination and cultural anxieties associated with the symbolism of aging have triggered an identity crisis among older adultsThis article examines the discursive construction of the identity of the elderly across macro, meso, and micro levels to investigate how the thinking of youngold binary opposition shapes the objectified identity of elders and intensifies the identity crisisDrawing on the theory of intersubjectivity, this study discusses the approaches to transcend the binary opposition and to reconstruct the subjectivity of the eldersThis study also highlights how discourse analysis can contribute to the reconstitution of the subjectivity of older adults and provide practical recommendations for fostering a more inclusive society.
