Abstract

The construction of autonomy is an indispensable stage in the development of the field of Area Studies in various countriesBoth social and academic demands dominate this processSocial autonomy and intellectual autonomy are the foundation and condition for the development of rudimentary area studies into fullfledged Area Studies in Britain, the United States, and RussiaUnder the influence of colonial interests and conservative political traditions, the diplomatic turn and pragmatic political thought, nationbuilding, and critical political reforms, all these three countries constructed their due academic fields of Area StudiesSince then, their academic interests, orientations, and institutions inherited the same paradigm as seen in the field of Area StudiesChinas independent knowledge system of Area Studies should find the developmental path among the following three goals: building a community with a shared future for mankind, strengthening the exchange of world civilizations, and constructing an autonomous Chinese Area Studies school.
