Abstract
Chimes and drums belongs to two fields, but they are related inherently. It was showed by the translation way of the name. There were chimes earlier in the history of China, and then the hour bells appeared. Because the chimes were giving aloud voice for thousands of years in China, they were given the name of the foreign timekeeping machinery the tool of telling time. It is the long procession from politics to entertainment, then from the entertainment to our daily practical. It is a long procession from combining the cultures of foreign countries with China, to recognition of the east and the west, too. It also proves that the Chinese musical culture has large capacity for richness, continuity, and profoundness.
