In The Nation-State and Violence,Giddens analyzed two existent forms of violence and their apparent different momentum of development, within the transition of the state systems from the traditional state to the absolutist state, and then to the nation-state.The two forms of violence are respectively the visible violence which refers to the state's exercising armed forces, and the invisible violence which refers to the state's supervisory control via administrative forces. These forms make up of the inner tension of violence, the systematic analysis about which, however, was neglected by Giddens in his work.As a result,it's undoubtedly a beneficial supplement to Giddens'idea that to reflexively highlight the inner tension of violence within the transition of the state system.
