捷克斯洛伐克汉学家普实克曾三次到访中国。他在20世纪30年代与鲁迅等人的交往十分著名，但他在50年代两次以官方身份访问中国并深度参与社会主义国家文化交流的经历却被人遗忘。新一代研究者对于普实克的理解通常来自两组对照关系：一是普实克与夏志清的论争，二是王德威将普实克与陈世骧、高友工等人一同划入所谓的“抒情传统”谱系。普实克在这两组对照关系中都被塑造为僵化且过时的人物。回到相关著述会发现，普实克与夏志清、王德威之间真正的分歧，在于对中国现代转型的动力来源和革命的内涵有着不同的认识，普实克在中国现代文学中所找到的现代性，不是在西方的“冲击”之下作为“回应”的现代，而是一种根植于中国自身土壤的独立的现代。
